Tenerife is the biggest island in the Canary Islands in the Atlantic. It is also a widely known venue for backpackers who want to spend their holidays to Tenerife in quiet bliss. There are many natural wonders, cultural features, and intriguing spots that will make a backpacker’s heart quake in excitement.
Discover the areas outside the white sands of Playa de las Americas, the fun water parks, and the luxurious accommodations. Stray off the beaten path and head out to these magical although less famous spots that make Tenerife one of the most interesting islands in the Canaries.
1. Los Gigantes
Head out the beautiful town of Los Gigantes where you can find enormous rock formations, the main attractions of the place. Acquire a boat trip and get a chance to sail alongside the groups of dolphins that stay in the waters just off the bay. If you want a closer look at the dolphins, it is a good idea to hire a smaller vessel or charter one.
On land, you can stroll along the verdant, beautiful gardens such as Puerto de la Cruz’s Botanical Gardens and the Jardines de Atlantico that will virtually ease the stress off you.
2. Mount Tiede
At 3,718 meters from sea level, the snow-topped Mt. Tiede is the tallest elevation in Spain and the third highest volcano in the world when measurements are taken from the ocean floor. Hiking trails and climbing routes point in, out, and around the natural reserve that encircles the grandiose mountain. Here you can encounter eerie rock formations, wild flowers, rarely seen birds, endemic reptiles, and other unusual fauna. Top off your adventure by hiking up the mountain itself and standing on its summit. If hiking proves to be very tiring, you can simply ride the cable cars and bus to the summit.
3. La Gomera
La Gomera is a small nearby island that can be reached by boat. For travellers who want to experience the “hidden Tenerife” experience, this destination is ideal for you. Here you can see tall waterfalls and green gardens of the Garajonay National Park. Experience the local culture by talking with the people in the idyllic villages that are scattered across the island. Far from urban life, these locals still retain the customs and traditions} that have been practiced for thousands of years.
