Parents, we understand that there are times where it is hard to know if your teenager is getting into trouble. We also know that it is hard to know when you need to intervene and get yourself involved in your child’s personal life.

1. Sudden changes in behavior. Has your teen’s behavior changed of late?

Teenage years are a time of great change. During teen period, children mature very fast. Monitoring major changes in friends, values, beliefs, attitude, dress/appearance and their relationship with you is important as a parent.

2. Instability- Is there a display of instability in your teen that you have noticed recently?

We realize teenagers can have different moods and can be hard to predict, however big emotional changes are a reason to be concerned. The symptoms you need to look for in your teen are moodiness, sadness, hostility, agitation and personality changes and as a parent you need to seek help for him/her.

3. Irresponsibility - Teenagers are known to be irresponsible; however when a teen shows multiple signs of irresponsibility all at once, it becomes a concern to look out for.

Teenagers ponder over the thought of remaining dependent or simply growing up. Interrupt and do not ignore any irresponsible behavior displayed by your teen like manipulation, lack of honesty,being late or break promises made.

4. Teen Separation- Is your teen suddenly trying to distance himself from you?

Teenagers and their parents are known for disagreeing on things. Teens mustn’t be permitted to distance themselves from their parents if it is the result of peer influence. Parents must stay close to their teens and talk frequently. Extreme outbursts such as yelling, threatening, and rebellion are cause for concern for you as a parent.

5. Has your teen started acting like it’s okay to do whatever they like and completely ignore your advice?

When teenagers refuse to accept what parents communicate or accept problems and even refuse to receive parental feedback in addition to being stubborn and uncooperative which is common, then parents have a serious problem on hand. Once recognized this should be discussed right away.
