Whilst Dick Turpin is long dead, his actions live on in modern day crimes on the road.

Innocent drivers who are not breaking any driving laws are the victims of a crime that is virulent around the country. The drivers are ambushed into a situation they have no control over.

It goes like this:

You may be following a vehicle, generally an ageing car or van, onto a roundabout or slip road. This vehicle, which often has no brake lights, brakes hard and you cannot avoid slamming into it.

There may be two cars involved. One is in front of you and another one may veer into its path, the car in front of you brakes hard and you crash into it.

These intentional collisions occur at busy road areas most of the time. The people behind the crash know just what to say to make it sound like the innocent driver was in the wrong. These modern day highwaymen work in teams, owning and managing repair garages and car hire companies. They charge the victims more money than they should over repair work and hire cars for the ‘injured’ party. They will then go on to make a claim for compensation so that the innocent driver’s insurance premiums go up. Often these criminals will make the claim bigger by having passengers in their car who all claim to be injured too. The massive scale of these fake accidents has left insurers on guard and they suspect there could be as many as 10,000 false claims from these gangs each year. To deal with the massive problem, the Insurance Fraud Bureau has been set up by the Association of British Insurers. They work with the police to find these gangs and bring them to justice.

Each day motorists and passengers are at risk from the work of these gangs. The criminals will be stopped when drivers, insurers and the police work together.
